KIRK ADKINS

Kirk Adkirs

Kirk worked as a farrier from 1971 to 2007. Between 1986 to 2000, he worked at the UC Davis, Vet Med Teaching hospital where his responsibilities included:

  • Farrier services for the patients seen at the hospital. Teaching students and residents
  • Farrier techniques needed for a veterinary practice in formal labs and clinical settings
  • Fabrication and application of splints and other orthopedic devices for a variety of domestic and non domestic animals
  • Fabrication of experimental medical equipment and participation in research projects of clinicians and residents

During this time, he also assisted during the procedures of surgery and radiology and the recovery of animals from anesthesia.

From 1986 to 2013, he was guest lecturer ANS 115 H, Principal instructor for ANS 149 and 149l. During this time, his responsibilities included course content development and lectures for a course designed for a professional in an equine related field to understand the art and science of farriery. Topics include anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomechanics, diseases and materials and methods for shoeing horses.
